Leslie came to Toronto 40 years ago and retired after operating his own tailoring business. Through his daughter, Leslie discovered that St. Clair West Services for Seniors wanted to start a sewing club for seniors. Leslie became the sewing club's facilitator and even helped with choosing the sewing machines for the club. The class runs Wednesdays from 1:30 - 3:00 but due to client demand, a second sewing class was started on Mondays. We caught up with Leslie recently and here's what he had to say:
Why do you like volunteering here? I like to teach people to sew and I am seeing the sewing club members making progress. It makes me feel like I'm doing something good.
How has volunteering changed your life? Volunteering makes me feel important. I meet a lot of new people and I have made a lot of new friends.
Would you encourage others seniors like yourself to volunteer? Yes, I would. I like toencourage people to do something everyday that contributes to the community, because it makes you live longer.
